Fraser Kershaw first came to Barcelona at 15, representing America in a global youth soccer tournament. He has been experimenting with films since childhood, and The Summer of Love — made with friends and family — has gathered 12 wins and awards on the festival circuit, with a few nominations.
Hello Fraser, how did you come up with such an original way of showing a story?
It was all experimentation. It was in control. The Light above leads.
Tell us something about the first time you visited Barcelona? Were you enthralled?
Yes, I was 15 years old, representing America in a global youth soccer tournament with countries around that world, that changed my life. Barcelona was the first place that made me say, I never want to leave. Now, here I am, all over again, with a film, a few kilometers away from the same stadium we duked it out in.
What inspired you to make ‘The Summer of Love’ and how do you think the people of Barcelona will accept the film?
We were experimenting with films since we were kids in our neighborhood. The methods have changed, but the same feeling of having fun is still there. If it’s not fun, I don’t want to make the film. Madrid has welcomed me with open arms; I imagine Barcelona will hug extra tight. Una Abrazo.
Was there a particular time when you recognized that this type of filmmaking is your way of telling stories?
No. The story is essentially the final boss. The financiers, producers, managers, directors and everyone else in-between, seem to be a byproduct of the final boss, or it become muddy. Clean water is best.
What are some of the biggest challenges you encountered in making this film?
The only challenge was holding onto this same vision from years ago. I finally had time to put it together from a memory.
What were the production realities from casting and editing that you had to accommodate?
This was with friends and family. Zero stress on any of the details. All fun.

We understand you have collaborated with OneRepublic’s ‘Brent Kutzle’ and Avatar’s ‘J.A.C. Redford’ on some projects within musical scores, how did you get your start within music?
I first started experimented with producing raw organic sounds into fully digital with Eric ‘Popeye’ Villa from Central California. He was one of the first to have a full music studio in Central California. It was a playground for experimentation and fun and we put out a song on a water themed film that seemed to resonate well.
What are the current awards and wins on ‘Summer of Love’ within the festival circuit thus far?
I heard this week it was 12 wins and awards, with a few nominations.
Do you believe that a filmmaker should bring always something original or he/she should stick to classic but cinema styles?
Go with the vision from above. It’s always right.
What film festival are you looking forward to attending?
I’m in this experimental genre, so no mega generic runs for me. I think most film festivals around the globe are essential, as it allows their culture to grow and fortify together as one. The Barcelona Indie Awards does a great job at highlighting the gems.
We have heard you will be in Europe in the fall, and you have future in your filmmaking career here?
Yes, October. I also hope to be with you again in Barcelona in February of 2026.
